“How are you?”
- Fine. Thank you.
“How old are you?”
- T****.
“What’s your name?”
- Six.
His attention span was non-existent in my opinion. I think some of it may have been because he probably wasn’t used to the class yet. Based on the experience I had tutoring other young children before I expected him to take the lesson much more seriously and be ready to learn.
His English level was lower than I expected! This made it challenging to ask him a question and have him give the correct answer. One of the issues I noticed was that his answer would not match the question. For example, Q. “What is your name?” A. “I am six.” Sometimes he would reply only in Chinese.
I do think it would be helpful if one of his parents could be available for the first 2 or 3 lessons to help translate some words, or to tell him what to do: “Answer teacher’s question!” “Stop playing with the desk!” and so on.
I will try to find some more materials for his age and English levels that go over things like introductions and answering simple questions about oneself and family. I think if he sees pictures and words together it may help him understand what he is saying and why he is saying it.
